Love These Porcelain 'HOME' Candle Votives

Not On The High Street

From one of my favourite online stores, these votives embody the whole 'spirit of home' for me.  They just seem as if they'd create a  calm, glowing, nurturing, warm, soft, harmonious sort of vibe.

I have the word 'home' spelled out in large scrapbooking letters above a doorway (the first one you see as you enter my home through the front door), and it's such a simple way to remind myself of why I love where I live so much....

... it's not just my house.... it's my home.

Etsy Dreaming ~ Zipper 8 Lighting ~ Atmosphere And Mood...

Lighting is one of the most essential areas to address when it comes to making a home feel right. One of my earliest posts opined about the remarkable effect lighting can have on our homes and the people within them.

There's all different sorts of lighting, but I love lighting that brings soft, glowing, moody atmosphere to a room.

I love cocooning myself in soothing, flattering, mellow light.

It makes me feel good! (And look better too - haha.)

These lights from Zipper 8 Lighting on Etsy are both atmospheric and unusual. The artist (they seem like 'art' to me) makes them from maps, book pages, drinking straws, old recycled plastic bags... an amazing feat.

Her name is Allison Patrick, and she's a recent graduate from Architecture School in New York City.

How glam does that sound!

They look so beautiful in their lit up state.

So eye-catching and sculptural.

I also like the earthy feel that comes from them. They just seem to give off good grounding vibes (especially the lights made from the pages of a book and map pieces - you know how I love books and maps)!

I think it's always special to be able to buy something that's gorgeous, and has been made from 'found' materials rather than 'manufactured' in a sterile environment.

A Guest Post About Decorative Finishes

I've been flat out over the last few weeks as this is one of the busiest times of the year at work. So, when the folks from Arcadian Lighting contacted me about a guest post, I cheerfully agreed as it meant I got to 'take a post off'!

Here's their guest post about decorative finishes...

Anyone can buy a light fixture or accent chair from a chain market and call it decorating. But if you truly want to make these pieces your own, consider designing with decorative finishes.

Once relegated to the stippling or faux-finishing of drab, beige walls, more people are now customizing their pieces by using decorative finishing techniques on their table lamps, furniture, and even floors.

Take a look at some of these images for your own design inspiration. After that, break out your can of paints, glazes, sponges and dry brushes, and get to finishing!

Here is a chair that has been scavenged from Craigslist.  It was reupholstered in a velvet pea-green fabric and the frame was refinished with black lacquer.  Lacquering wooden furniture is easy; just sand the previous finish off, coat with primer and then paint it with a couple of coats of high-quality lacquer paint.

Boring old kitchen cabinets have been sanded and refinished with glossy black lacquer paint and a pretty gold trim.  Goodbye boring, hello chic!

Shown here is a wall that has been color-washed.  The wash of color is warm and rustic and will create the appearance of worn paint.  This finishing technique is very easy.  After preparing your walls for paint, mix together ¼ cup of water, colorant, and 2 cups of glaze.  Apply this mixture with a large sponge and finish it with a dry bush.

If you are able to, consider painting or finishing your floors.  The floor of this entryway has been finished in three different stains to create a gorgeous chevron-like pattern.

A junky, $5 table lamp found on Craigslist gets a makeover with several coats of matte paint. The base used to be coral red and the shade was dingy beige. This shabby chic lamp just went from drab to fab!

So, if you think you’ve found the perfect $10 chair or lamp but it’s too old and worn out, use a decorative finish to make it like new again. If you live in your own home, accent boring beige walls, ceilings or floors with a decorative finish.

A Gorgeous 'Nest' In Brooklyn by Suzanne And Lauren McGrath...

I spotted this very stylish and pretty Brooklyn Apartment over on Hip Hip Gin Gin, and the original photos (8 of them) and story can be found over here at Traditional Home.

Lauren was a fresh out of college 'fashion writer' when she was lucky enough to get hold of this delightful apartment. She then called on her mum, Suzanne, who has worked as an interior designer for years (including alongside Martha Stewart for 10 of them), to help her out.

The result, as you can see, is simple, pretty, welcoming, and just straight out gorgeous!

My favourite things are the little 'love seat sofa', the feather cushion, the bedside table with the twist legs, and that stunning mirror (bought for a bargain price at Anthropologie).

Here's what the Traditional Home story says about the table...  Lauren’s absolute favorite furnishing is an old desk-turned-vanity that Suzanne found cast out on a Brooklyn street 20 years ago. She appropriated it as a small corner writing table for her living room, then passed it on to Lauren for reinvention as a vanity. “Paired with an unusual vintage Lucite stool, it’s rejuvenated,” says Suzanne. “It’s probably not worth anything, but it has good bones.”

I love the yellow lamp too. It reminded me of the ones below that I'd seen over at Shine by S.H.O! I've had them pinned in my inspiration file for ages, and when I saw the yellow lamp in Lauren's apartment, I grabbed the opportunity to show you this pic too!

A Living Room Full Of Comfort and Ease

I can just imagine secluding myself in here for at least a day, curled up with a good book, a mug of milo, and some of my favourite treats.

The atmosphere in this room is just so relaxing and nurturing.

The collection of items on the mantelpiece looks fascinating, and the grouping of mirrors would bounce light all over the place.

And, being who I am, I'd be remiss if I didn't comment on those delightful looking cushions. :)

There's even a mirror ball! (Imagine the firelight glinting off that at night, and reflecting in the mirrors too....it'd be like a room full of little stars.)

Come Dine With Me - No. 7 - So So Pretty

What a magical, whimsical, and downright pretty setting in which to share an intimate meal with a loved one.

Just gorgeous.

And, as always, as a part of this series.....

Ask yourself: 'Do I savour the ritual of eating with my family/friends whenever I can?'

Which leads to: ' When, or how, can I include this precious time together more?'

Because: There's something so primitively delightful and bonding about the 'breaking of bread' (so to speak) with our loved ones. It's a ritual and a tradition that's been crowded out and lost amongst television, technology, and texting! It's time to 'get together' and connect the old fashioned way again.
